What does this mean for you as a CVCC Nurse?
It means career diversity, professional cross-training, a supportive and cohesive team, and dynamic, interesting cases.
The Cardiovascular Critical Care Unit (CVCC) is a very specialized cardiology medicine and cardiothoracic surgery inpatient intensive care unit that is experiencing extensive growth. Our CVCC nurses receive advanced training to care for a wide variety of acute cardiac patients, including cardiogenic shock, advanced heart failure, complicated STEMIs, cardiac arrests, unstable electrophysiology conditions, and immediate post-operative cardiothoracic surgery care. Our nurses also go through specific education on various cardiac assist devices, including Impellas, Intra-Aortic Balloon Pumps (IABP), post-operative cardiothoracic surgery patient recovery, and Extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO). The CVCC nursing team thrives on teamwork and collaboration with our highly skilled physician partners and is an incredible place to learn, grow, and develop cardiac-specific critical care nursing skills while being part of an incredibly supportive care environment.
We are a rapidly growing cardiovascular medicine and cardiac surgical team that cares for a wide variety of patients with underlying cardiac issues. We perform well over 600 open-heart cases a year and have the best outcomes for myocardial infarctions in all of New England. We have a very dynamic team that prides itself on teamwork and collaboration. We are supportive of nurses at all levels and have created a dynamic orientation to help support nurses in gaining the skill set to be successful in the critical care cardiac environment. Previous experience in cardiology, cardiac surgery, progressive care, or critical care is not required to be successful on our CVCC team! The nurse who will be successful working in the CVCC is one who values teamwork, possesses strong interpersonal skills, has a desire to continuously learn, thrives working in a fast-paced, challenging environment, and has a passion for cardiac medicine and surgery.
Qualifications for a CVCC nurse:
- Graduate from an accredited Nursing Program with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Nursing (BSN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN) required.
Are you wondering if you can make the transition to cardiac nursing without prior cardiac experience? The answer is YES.
New graduate nurses, experienced nurses who are new to critical care, and nurses with critical care experience are all welcome to join our CVCC team. Part of the onboarding process for all CVCC RNs includes robust critical care classes, group simulation experiences, 1:1 clinical orientation with a preceptor, and CVCC-specific training. This allows you to come off orientation with the skills necessary to provide safe, competent care to the patients in the CVCC, while continuing to advance your clinical skills, following our CVCC-specific nursing professional development pathway. All CVCC RNs need ACLS certification, which can be done after hire if a nurse does not already hold this certification. Additionally, we encourage and support our RNs to obtain additional certifications in critical care, cardiology medicine, and cardiothoracic surgery.
